Categorial Formalisation of Relativisation: Pied Piping, Islands, and Extraction Sites *

چکیده
This work formulates a grammar of English relativisation on the monostratal ruleto-rule design. Specification of a language model under this design is usually the interactive result of fixing a lexical categorisation and a notion of syntactic consequence (defined by specifying rules of formation). The language model is the closure of the lexicon under syntactic consequence. Our model however is specified in the formalism of categorial logic, by which we refer to enrichments of Lambek categorial grammar (Lambek 1958, 1961) with additional category-constructors. Lambek calculus proffers a system of categorisation in which the notion of syntactic consequence is fixed by defining an interpretation of category formulas. Thus the notion of syntactic consequence is defined logically (i.e. in virtue of interpretation), and rules of syntax just serve to calculate, not to define.

Discontinuity And The Lambek Calculus
This paper is concerned with tile treatment of discontinuous constituency within Categorial Grammar. In particular, I address the problem of providing an adequate formalisation of categorial commctives l)rol)osed by Moortgat (1988), which are useful for handling certain forms of diseontimmus eonstitnency, l)espite some interesting proposals, a satisfactory logic for these e{mnectives has so far...
متن کاملGrammar Logicised Relativisation
Many variants of categorial grammar assume an underlying logic which is associative and linear. In relation to left extraction, the former property is challenged by island domains, which involve nonassociativity, and the latter property is challenged by parasitic gaps, which involve nonlinearity. We present a version of type logical grammar including ‘structural inhibition’ for nonassociativity...
متن کاملTuples, Discontinuity, and Gapping in Categorial Grammar
This paper solves some puzzles in the formalisation of logic for discontinuity in categorial grammar. A 'tuple' operation introduced in [Solias, 1992] is defined as a mode of prosodic combination which has associated projection functions, and consequently can support a property of unique prosodic decomposability. Discontinuity operators are defined model-theoretically by a residuation scheme wh...
متن کاملDiscontinuous Lambek Calculus
The search for a full treatment of wrapping in type logical grammar has been a task of long-standing. In this paper we present a calculus for discontinuity addressing this challenge, ω-DL. The calculus allows an unbounded number of points of discontinuity (hence the prefix ω-) and includes both deterministic and nondeterministic discontinuous connectives. We believe that it constitutes a genera...
متن کاملMicrovariation in Celtic Relatives
1. Introduction: The syntactic effects of relativisation in Welsh, Irish and Scottish Gaelic vary in a complex and potentially baffling way between the languages and across their dialects. The crucial components of this variation are resumptivity, " wh-agreeing " complementizers, a differential treatment of locality domains, and variation in the availability of pied-piping. In this paper we arg...
